Kurdistan Region Prime Minister, Nechirvan Barzani, received British Minister of State for International Development, Rory Stewart, and his accompanying delegation, which included the British Ambassador to Iraq, Frank Baker, the head of British Consulate General in Erbil, and a number of diplomats and officials from the British Department for International Development.
Mr. Stewart commended the Kurdistan Regional Government for having accommodated and provided assistance to a large number of refugees and displaced persons, who fled the terrorists of the Islamic State group, ISIS, and took refuge in the Kurdistan Region.
The two sides also discussed the political situation in the Kurdistan Region and President Barzani’s recent initiative to resolve political differences.
The British Minister highly valued the initiative, and also expressed his country’s support for the settlement of the outstanding issues between Erbil and the Federal Government of Iraq.
Prime Minister Barzani expressed his government’s appreciation for UK’s military and humanitarian support to Kurdistan since the start of ISIS attacks. He praised UK’s role in the war against terrorism, as an important part of the international coalition fighting ISIS.
He expressed his wishes to further strengthen and develop bilateral relations between Erbil and London.
On the relations between Erbil and Baghdad, Prime Minister Barzani stressed that the Kurdistan Region is ready to settle all the outstanding issues with Baghdad through mutual understanding. In this regard, he highlighted the need to reach a new formula of partnership that would guarantee coexistence in Iraq in the future, build confidence among Iraq’s communities and help the displaced persons to return to their place of origin.
