The President of the Kurdistan Region Masoud Barzani and the Prime Minister of the Kurdistan Regional Government Nechirvan Barzani condemned the coup attempt of 15/16 July night in Turkey.

“The Presidency of the Kurdistan Region condemns any attempts to change politically-elected system through coups and arms against the will of people and democratic principle,” said the Kurdistan Region Presidency on Saturday. “The logic of weapon and violence is against democrac and destroys political stability and coexistence.”

“The Kurdistan Region of Iraq wishes to see stability and peace in Turkey and the Middle East as only stability and peace will serve the interests of the people of the area,” the statement concluded.

Meanwhile the PM Barzani expressed his happiness “to see the triumph of the people of Turkey over a group of military officers who were trying to overthrow a legitimate government against the will of people. We believe the failed coup will strengthen the institutions, government and people of Turkey and will prevent possible coup attempts in the future.

I congratulate Turkey’s President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, Prime Minister Binali Yildirim, all parties and the people of Turkey, who had a major role in thwarting the coup.

The unity of Turkey’s parties and figures helped to defend the legitimacy of the government and prevent Turkey and the entire region from plunging into a major chaos. The people protected the legitimacy of Turkey with their own blood.  We believe this illustrates the extraordinary awareness of the people and we believe this kind of awareness will encourage stability and dialogue and eliminate terror and chaos in our region.”

Contrary to the Kurdistan Democratic Party leaders, each of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan, Gorran (Change) Movement and the Islamic Group of Kurdistan (Komal) appeared to be happy with the coup attempts. Shanaz Ibrahim Ahmed, the sister of Hero Ibrahim Ahmed the de-facto leader of the PUK and head of the party’s foreign organizations, posted on her Facebook that the night is “historic night” for which tomorrow “God might recompense our lost lives of Shirnakh and Jazira; a night which a mouse hole might become a palace for the dictators and sultans.”

Among others, Soran Omar, Komal’s MP and adviser to the party’s leader, posted on his Facebook page: “Erdogan fell! When seats shake, that’s what happens! Your own soldiers turn against you!” After a few hours when the dust fell down and the coup appeared to fail, he deleted his post.
