The Chancellor of the Kurdistan Region’s Security Council Masrour Barzani received the US Senator Marco Rubio and the US Consul in Erbil Matthias Mitman Wednesday in Salahaddin Pirmam.
In the meeting, Masrour Barzani and Senator Rubio discussed the historical and sectarian differences between the Iraqi communities. Masrour Barzani told Rubio that as Kurds “we have done what we can to hold Iraq together. The mentality in Baghdad does not accept partnership.” He also said that Iraq is practically divided and further falling apart.
The war against ISIS, the preparations for liberating Mosul and mechanisms for boosting US-Kurdistan cooperation were elaborated. Senator Rubio commended the role of the Peshmerga forces in the war against ISIS and global terrorism as a “key and effective role”.
They both discussed the political and social movements in Mosul as well as the challenges to a broad political agreement between the communities in post-ISIS Mosul. “We expect the Peshmerga be as equipped as the Iraqi Army for this operation,” Masrour Barzani reemphasized on arming and financing the Peshmerga forces.
The Chancellor of the KRSC briefed the Senator and his accompanying delegation ISIS’s attack on the Peshmerga frontlines over the last few days in Tilisqof and other warfronts. Masrour Barzani expressed his condolences to the loss of Charles Keating IV, US Navy Seal who fell alongside the Peshmerga. “We shed blood together and we praise out bilateral relations. We are looking forward to further develop these ties.”
