Masrour Barzani, member of the Kurdistan Democratic Party’s Politburo, said on Sunday that his party insists on a public poll if the political parties fail to reach an agreement with regard to the method of electing the president of Kurdistan Region.
A KDP delegation headed by Masrour Barzani visited both the Christian and Turkmen political parties in Erbil. In a brief press conference after meeting the Christian parties in Ainkawa, Masrour Barzani told reporters that his party has a firm belief that it is the people who shall have the last say in every outstanding issue.
“We believe that people should elect the president of Kurdistan Region in a direct poll. If we cannot reach a consensus with the other parties, then let the people of Kurdistan decide on it,” he said.
It has been several days since the five largest political parties in the Parliament are regularly meeting to come to an agreement over the mandate of the current President of Kurdistan Region Masoud Barzani and reach a consensus over the law of the Presidency.
