The President of Kurdistan Region Masoud Barzani calls on the electoral body of the Kurdistan Region to prepare for the presidential elections on August 20, 2015.
Fuad Hussein, Chief of Staff of the Kurdistan Region’s Presidency, said in a statement that President Barzani has written to the Independent High Electoral Commission of the Kurdistan Region to make all the necessary preparations for the presidential elections in Kurdistan Region. “The President has tasked the relevant KRG authorities to ensure fair and free elections are held for the President of the Kurdistan Region of Iraq,” Hussein has been cited by the website of the Presidency.
The current mandate of the presidency expires on August 20 2015 which was extended by the Parliament for two years on 30 June 2013. To avoid legitimacy gap, President Barzani called on the Parliament in August 2014 to find a solution to the issue of presidency as well as the constitutional draft of the Kurdistan Region that was passed by the Parliament in 2009 without setting into referendum. The Parliament only decided to work on the issue of the constitution earlier this year by forming a committee in May 2015, without any concrete move towards the presidency issue.
There is a large divide between the political parties on whether the president should be elected in a direct vote by the people or shall be voted in by the Parliament.
