The Kurdistan Region President Masoud Barzani has congratulated the pro-Kurdish People’s Democratic Party (HDP) for their significant success in yesterday’s election in Turkey.
In a statement released today, President Barzani congratulated the people of Turkey and the competing political parties on their achievements. He said: “The election proves that democratic process in the country has reached a noticeable level.”
He also congratulated the pro-Kurdish People’s Democratic Party (HDP) for their poll results. “I am very pleased that finally Kurds succeeded to enter the Turkish parliament through a democratic process; this is very important to take the peace process forward.”
“We will continue to support the peace and democratic process in Turkey as we have always hoped to see an end to oppression and injustice in the country,” the statement reads.
HDP won 13.12% of the votes during Sunday’s parliamentary election. The result is a major success for the Kurds as President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan’s AK Party lost its majority. Kurds will now occupy about 80 seats in 550 seat assembly.
