Massoud Barzani Praises MOL Group’s Commitment to Iraqi Kurdistan

In a joint press conference with Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban, Mr. Masoud Barzani, President of Kurdistan Region of Iraq, praised the great commitment shown by MOL Group towards Kurdistan.

“MOL Group made a brave decision to stay in Kurdistan when when we faced threats from terrorists. Kurdish people appreciate this,” stated President Barzani who is in a two-days visit to Budapest where MOL Group headquarters is located.

MOL Group has been present in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq since 2007, when its subsidiary MOL Kalegran signed a contract for Akri-Bijeel Block as operator and farmed into Shaikan as minority partner. Since then recent years’ three Successful discoveries made Kurdistan Region of Iraq the most promising growth area for the Group. 

Last year, Erbil approved the development of a major oil field by Hungary’s MOL Group. The integrated oil and gas company has indicated it wants to buy Kurdish crude for its European refineries on a regular basis. Strong ties between Hungary and Kurdistan were reinforced with the opening of a new Hungarian consulate in Erbil in November.

Orban said the government of Hungary supports nations striving for independence, including the Kurdistan region of Iraq, which he said can play a stable role in the Middle East.

Barzani arrived in Budapest on Sunday for talks with top Hungarian officials.
