“A central government in Baghdad does not solve the problems,” said Masrour Barzani, the Adviser of the Kurdistan Region’s Security Council, in a meeting with the British Ambassador to Iraq Frank Baker on Monday.
The meeting covered the political and security developments in Iraq and the war against ISIS in both Iraq and Syria. Masrour Barzani emphasized on the need of further military assistance to the Kurdistan Region by the international community, adding that: “Peshmarga has given tremendous sacrifices despite the limited and old weapons.”
Masrour Barzani also called on the Iraqi parties to review the Iraqi political structure in Baghdad to consolidate the political process and achieve decentralization for the local governments. “We do not believe that a central government in Baghdad will solve the problems. This has been tried many times.”
On his part, Ambassador Baker reemphasized on UK’s air force support to the Peshmarga combatting ISIS. He also elaborated that in the upcoming weeks UK will be sending more de-mining devices, providing trainings and military equipment for the Kurdistan Region.
